New Zealand’s All Blacks described him as “one of the most charismatic players to play for Ireland”
The funeral is taking place today of one of Kilkenny and Ireland’s sporting legends.
Willie Duggan was capped 41 times with the Ireland Rugby team, which he also captained.
Since news of his death broke on Monday morning, friends, teammates, and even former opponents have been paying tribute to the sporting giant.
In a statement on the website of New Zealand’s All Blacks, they’ve described him as “one of the most charismatic players to play for Ireland” and one of their greatest rivals.
They also mention the fact that he became the first man in 100 years of Five Nations Rugby to be sent off back in 1977.
Aside from his sporting prowess, Willie was also a businessman and became Managing Director of his family business, Willie Duggan Lighting.
Yesterday the company tweeted that on behalf of the Duggan family they would like to thank everyone for the warm wishes of support at this time, and that, as a mark of respect, they’ll be closed today.
A celebration of Willie Duggan’s life took place at his Dunmore home yesterday and his funeral is taking place in St Mary’s Cathedral this morning.
