Martin Bridgeman in conversation with East Clare concertina player Mary McNamara ahead of her concert as part of Kilkenny TradFest 2017 on Blas Glas on KCLR
Mary MacNamara hails from East Clare and is a proud musician in and of that tradition. She was steeped in music from a young age and this has carried on to her daughter Sorcha Costello so the tradition has passed on. As you’ll hear Mary lives and breathes her music and her enthusiasm is infectious. She is a teacher and, in the age where you can see many technical aspects of playing with the latest technology, Mary’s focus is on the soul of the tune.
Mary and Sorcha will host workshops over the weekend of Kilkenny TradFest here and here and on the night before will take to the stage in the wonderful Home Rule Club, which is fast becoming the hub of traditional music concerts in Kilkenny. Mary, her daughter Sorcha Costello on fiddle and her husband Andrew (himself a fine accordion player) will play and it promises to be a great night of the finest music that East Clare has to offer.
