Episode 26 – Angels Well

Going back to the 1200s there was a plague in Kilkenny. People were congregating at the wells because they were thirsty but this was causing the disease to spread. The friars in the Black Abbey were concerned for the health of their community and so asked the bishop if they could run a channel from Kennys Well, the main water source for Kilkenny, into their grounds. The bishop said ok, as long as the pipe was the width of his episcopal ring and the flow could be stopped by a man’s little finger. Thus came into the being the Angels Well, marked by a plaque to its restoration in 1885. Fr John, the prior of the Black Abbey tells us the story here
