More houses were being built in Carlow by the end of last year than in Kilkenny.
Statistics compiled by GeoDirectory show that almost 5,000 units were under construction in December.
87 houses in Kilkenny and 110 in Carlow were in the process of being built at the end of 2016.
The data shows that the majority of building – 21% – was being done in Dublin.
Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon had the lowest numbers in the country.
Turnover of propertys in Carlow was at 2 per cent for the year which was slightly below average with Kilkennys at 1.8 per cent.
The average price of a house last year in Carlow stood at 141 thousand while Kilkennys was 177.
