Talks of creating parking spaces on the Abbey quarter site sparked a debate about multi storey car parks at Kilkenny county councils last meeting of 2017.
The Council has started a process to consider varying the City Development Plan to allow temporary parking on the former brewery site.
Senior Engineer Tony Lauhoff gave a presentation at last evening’s meeting which outlined the potential parking needs for the area to cater for standard car & also coach parking.
It led to heated exchanges with various councillors outlining how they would not allow multi-storey facilities to obstruct scenic views.
The plan however is for the “meanwhile use” of a section of the site closest to St Francis Bridge until it’s earmarked for another purpose in five to ten years time as part of the overall site development.
County Manager Colette Byrne told KCLR that no decision on multi-storey car parking is being made yet.
But speaking to KCLR news this morning Councillor Andrew McGuinness said that members opposed to multi-storey car parking in the city felt it was an opportune time to voice their opposition to the proposals.
