Lecturers at IT Carlow and Waterford IT have finally given their seal of approval for their proposed merger.
The TUI members of both colleges yesterday voted in favour of a memorandum of understanding for the Technological University for the South East.
The re-ballot saw a 79% yes vote from Waterford and 90% from Carlow.
It’s after Waterford’s TUI members had rejected the merger as recently as last month
Claus Derenda, the Chair of IT Carlow’s TUI branch, says the passing of this memorandum hasn’t come easily;
“It’s been a long time coming” he shared with KCLR News. “This memorandum of understanding was rejected in Carlow about two years ago, then we went back to the negotiation table to secure some deals that would give comfort to our members in Carlow. We did another ballot then several weeks ago which was then in turn rejected by the members of Waterford. That’s all been addressed in the re-ballot that we held yesterday, and it was accepted. So we’re delighted that we’re off the ground with this now, that the memorandum stands and that we can move forward with the Technological University for the South East.”
