A local GP is warning we have to be on our guard again over the Delta variant of Covid-19.

304 new cases have been confirmed by NPHET with 47 patients being treated for the virus in hospital, and the number in ICU unchanged at 13.

So far a total of 210 cases of the Delta variant have been confirmed, with concerns raised locally that it’s contributing to the high numbers in Carlow.

The infection rate for the county in the first two weeks of this month was the second-highest in the country at 188 per 100,000.  But it’s fallen back to seventh-highest in the latter stages of June, the rate now down to 100 after 57 cases between June 10 & 23.

While for the same two-week spread, Kilkenny had 40 positive tests returned with the county in the sixth-lowest position on a rate of 40 per 100,000.

Carlow GP Dr Ronan Gallagher says he’s not seeing a surge in local cases over the last few weeks.

But with the Delta variant deemed to be up to 60% more transmissable Dr Gallagher says we have to be warier.
