Bohemians have confirmed the signing of Thomastown native Colm Whelan from Derry City on a multi-year contract.

The former UCD star arrives at Dalymount Park with an impressive scoring record and a resilient attitude after overcoming two major injuries.

Bohemians Manager Alan Reynolds, who previously coached Whelan at Waterford, expressed his excitement about bringing the talented striker to the club. “Colly is an outstanding talent with a real eye for goal and I am delighted to have him on board as our No 9 for next season”

Whelan shared. “Bohs is a good fit for me, and having spoken with Rennie, he was a big sway in me coming here. I have a good relationship with him already. He likes me and trusts me, so I am really looking forward to it.”

Whelan’s journey to Bohemians has been one of determination. The 23-year-old forward was a standout at UCD, netting 44 goals in 66 games and playing a crucial role in their promotion push. His performances earned him regular call-ups to Jim Crawford’s Irish U21 squads, and he was even shortlisted for the PFAI First Division Player of the Year. However, a cruciate ligament injury in 2022 cut short his season and dashed potential moves abroad.

Moving from UCD to Derry City, Whelan made a strong debut but faced another setback with a second ACL injury just three games in. Now at Bohemians, Whelan is hopeful for a fresh start, drawing strength from the challenges he’s overcome. “I’ve had a tough couple of years, but that humbles you and makes you work hard to get back out on the pitch,” he said.

With his former coach Alan Reynolds now leading Bohemians, Whelan is eager to make his mark and resume his career at full strength. Bohemians fans will be watching closely as Whelan looks to bring his goal-scoring prowess to Dalymount Park.
