Discover which Renewable Home Heating Options are available for your home

Maximising comfort and efficiency while keeping costs and carbon emissions low are important factors to consider when upgrading your home heating system or building a new home.

Leading heating technology manufacturer Grant, has been providing innovative and efficient heating solutions to homes across Ireland for over 45 years. With a wide portfolio of products, Grant has cost-effective and sustainable heating technologies to suit properties of all sizes.

If you’re planning to build your own home this year or looking to transition to renewable energy in your current property, Grant has outlined a range of sustainable heating options to help decarbonise and future-proof your home for evolving energy needs.

Sustainable Heating for New Builds

For those building a new home, heat pumps are an excellent renewable heating option. Heat pumps are increasingly popular for their energy efficiency, sustainability, and compatibility with modern building standards. These systems draw renewable energy from the air to provide low-carbon heating, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional oil or gas boilers.

New builds with superior insulation and airtight construction are particularly well-suited to heat pumps, maximising their efficiency. However, in older homes, deep retrofitting may be necessary to prepare the property for heat pump installation.

Upgrading Heating Systems in Existing Homes

Upgrading to a heat pump isn’t always a straightforward option for older homes. In many cases, a more practical solution is switching to a high efficiency condensing boiler, such as the Grant Vortex HVO biofuel-ready condensing boiler.

As one of the first condensing oil boilers on the market, the Grant Vortex has become a popular choice for heating system upgrades across Ireland. For years, this innovative technology has helped improve boiler efficiency while reducing homeowners’ energy costs.

Grant has since enhanced its Vortex range to run on 100% HVO biofuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). All Grant Vortex boilers are HVO-ready, and even older models can be easily modified to use this biofuel during a routine service by a qualified engineer. This flexibility enables homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint —without the significant costs and disruption of deep retrofitting.

As the demand for renewable home heating technology continues to grow, Grant recently launched its next-generation Grant Aerona R290 air-to-water heat pump, highlighting the company’s dedication to sustainable heating innovation.

The A+++ energy-rated Grant Aerona R290 heat pump combines modern design, exceptional performance, and user-friendly operation. Designed to perform well in Ireland’s year-round climate, it comes in five models with outputs ranging from 4kW to 16kW, making it suitable for a wide variety of homes.

The Aerona R290 uses R290 refrigerant, a natural, energy-efficient alternative with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 3 – which is much lower than traditional refrigerants like R32, which is being phased out of use in heat pumps. Grant Aerona R290 heat pumps represent a significant step forward in reducing the environmental impact of home heating.
