Gardai are warning people in Carlow and Kilkenny to be mindful of keeping outbuildings and sheds secure.
Speaking to KCLR News, Sgt. John Duffy warned that it can be easy to be complacent when storing high-value goods such as tools and machinery in outbuildings and sheds.
He noted that installing sensor lights and wireless cameras can work to prevent theft, and advised that oil tanks should also be kept locked at all times.
He said that unsecured sheds can leave people vulnerable to theft.
“In a lot of cases, people will have outbuildings and sheds that are there, and they will keep very valuable equipment in them” he said, “and in many cases, these sheds aren’t being secured properly.”
“There’s no lock being put in place, or certainly locks that aren’t adequate for the type of equipment that’s inside. What we are asking is for people to be aware that sometimes complacency just kicks in with these things, and people think ‘sure it’ll be fine, it’ll be grand'”
He concluded by saying that “really, it’s all fine and grand until you lose hundreds or thousands of euros worth of equipment.”
