“He is wonderfully creative and has superb communication methods.”
Thats how Carlow County Council Climate Coordinator Janette O’Brien has described her colleague Shane Casey.
Shane Casey, Carlow County Council Biodiversity officer and author, came up with the novel concept to help educate young children about the importance of biodiversity in an age-friendly way tobecome the first in Ireland to create a children’s book entirely in-house.
He teamed up with Jannette who illustrated and designed the book.
The Three Billy Goats Gruff of Carlow is targeted at children of primary school age to spread the message of biodiversity.
Biodiversity is the number and types of flora and fauna that exist in a particular area but also concerns the problem of conserving them within this area.
The projects aligns with the County Carlow Biodiversity Action Plan 2023 – 2025, which set out a vision to further improve understanding of County Carlow’s biodiversity and take actions for its conservation and restoration.
Copies of the 28-page A5 book have been circulated for free to all 44 primary schools in Carlow and it will be available in all library branches across the county.
