Plans for the redevelopment of the St Canice’s/HSE site on the Dublin Road in Kilkenny should include a memorial to acknowledge the site’s history.
St Canice’s served as a Psychiatric Hospital for 150 years until its closure in 2006.
Speaking to KCLR News, City Councillor Sean O’hÁrgain said that recognsing the site’s difficult history was significant for many families.
“It’s a site that doesn’t have happy memories for lots of people and I have asked that there would be consideration given to some sort of a memorial within the grounds to people who passed away in the old psychiatric hospital.2
“We are all familiar in every part of Ireland where people unfortunately were dumped in some of those facilities and despite the excellent care that they got from our own mayor and other psychiatric nurses and staff over the years, there are difficult stories there.”
