A €20,000 fund administered by Waterways Ireland has been allocated to assist community-based projects along Ireland’s navigable rivers and canals, including the 111-kilometre Barrow Navigation.
An online webinar to highlight how to apply for the Community Heritage and Biodiversity Grant will be held by Waterways Ireland this evening (January 21st) from 7pm until 8:30pm.
The other waterways eligible for funding are the Erne System, the Grand Canal, the Lower Bann, the Royal Canal, the Shannon Navigation, the Shannon-Erne Waterway and the Ulster Canal (Upper Lough Erne to Clones).
Noting previous funding awards, Waterways Ireland stated that successful projects had “prioritised community-led research, surveys that documented local heritage features, collection of oral histories, and biodiversity monitoring along the waterways.
“Successfully funded projects need to commit to making their findings publicly available through Waterways Ireland’s digital platforms and archives, helping build an open knowledge base about waterway heritage…
“The grant scheme could fund creative and engaging community projects that bring waterway heritage to life for diverse audiences. This might include supporting heritage festivals, educational programmes, arts projects, or digital interpretation projects that help people connect with waterway heritage in meaningful ways.”
