A local councillor says hes shocked at the latest Education Sectoral Plan announced today.

It’s after three schools in Carlow and three in Kilkenny are to progress to tender or construction in 2026 and 2027

Labours Sean O’hArgain says the government has failed students after almost two decades of broken promises on a new school for Coláiste Pobail Osraí.

The all Irish post primary school was first promised a new building in 2008, yet remains excluded from current construction plans alongside Kilkenny City Vocational School.

Cllr O’hArgáin wants answers:  “Frankly, you could only come to the conclusion that the schools that are put forward by the Education and Training Board (ETB) are being discriminated against when you see major building projects having taken place for other secondary schools in Kilkenny over the last number of years.”

“I’m calling on the Minister and on the government representatives in Carlow Kilkenny, one of whom is is the former chair of the ETB to explain why this is the case and to ensure that the Minister is acutely aware now of the huge disappointment and anger of parents and staff and the authorities of those schools.”

Meanwhile Prinicipal of Presentation De La Salle Bagenalstown says he’s delighted with the news that they will get a new school build to cater for 750 students.

Michael Hickey says the news filtered down to Pupils and staff this morning.

He told KCLR, it will really benefit the community: “It’s brilliant news for us and for the people of Bagenalstown and the surrounding areas.”

“I suppose the school here is at the centre of the community and we often have the GAA club or the soccer club or athletics clubs coming in to use our facilities. and I suppose to have a brand new modern facility to share that resource with the community, to invite people in, it will be massive for our school community.”
