Just over 16,700 people were recorded as homeless in December, a drop of more than 200 when compared to November.
According to the Department of Housing, more than five thousand children are living in emergency accommodation.
While the reduction is welcome, Ciara Quinn of Kilkenny’s Good Shepherd Centre told KCLR News that the overall trend remains very worrying.
“I think overall it needs to be reflected that from the start to the end of 2025, the figures rose by 1800.”
“So I think that’s the figure to really reflect upon is that overall the figures are still going up by that drastic percentage – the figures don’t tell everything.”
“Emergency services and local authorities deal every day with people who are classified as hidden homeless, people who are couchsurfing or who are living in circumstances where there’s overcrowding in the homes.”
