We’re waking up to a wet and windy Wednesday as Carlow and Kilkenny are among yet another weather warning.

Status yellow alerts took effect last night and continue to 11pm with heavy rainfall due across Leinster as well as Tipperary, Waterford, Cork and Monaghan with winds worst in Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Meath and Louth until lunchtime.

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly says it’s; “A very wet morning across much of the country with heavy rain and strong winds also, that heavy rain will continue through this morning and this afternoon it will continue in the East but it will brighten up in the West, however strong, onshore winds will also bring another issue with a risk of coastal flooding along the East coast in particular, so you have a risk of river flooding and coastal flooding through today”.

Gardaí are asking all road users to take extra care on roads with difficult travelling conditions in parts due to flooding, rising water surface levels and poor visibility.

They call on motorists to adjust their speed while those using public transport should check in advance if services are running.

Meanwhile, it appears we’ve not seen a dry day since last year.

Valentia weather station in Co Kerry yesterday recorded 48 consecutive days of rain, covering every single day of 2026.

The most recent day with zero rainfall across the country was 51 days – ago on the 29th of December – when all 25 primary weather stations observed zero-millimetres of rainfall, according to the Irish Independent.
