The fate of ABP Food Group’s processing plant in Ferrybank looks uncertain as negotiations with the staff’s 230-strong workforce about potential redundancies continue.
While ABP has stressed that its abbatoir at Christendom will not be affected by this news, it remains unclear if the company will retain any cutting and deboning operations on the site.
Speaking to KCLR News, local Councillor Ger Frisby spoke about the likely consequences that potentially significant lay-offs would mean for the locality. “There’s not a huge amount of other big employers on this side of the bridge other than in the Port of Waterford.”
“It would be a big loss to the local area and the local community and the local retailers. If it does go through and it comes through that there’s something like 230 jobs going to be lost there, the costs inside, I think it would be a big letdown for the area.”
