The need to repair damaged roads across Carlow has been stymied by almost 50 consecutive days of rainfall, much to the frustration of outdoor staff, engineers, and elected members alike.
A list of damaged roads across the county was swiftly drawn up by Carlow County Council in co-operation with Transport Infrastructure Ireland before the worst of the recent flooding had even abated.
Speaking to KCLR News, Cllr Brian O’Donoghue said that all council stakeholders are equally keen to remedy the county’s roads, since they themselves are also local road users.
“We all pay our car tax as well and when you’re stranded in a pothole or you’re curtailing your speed a little bit to try and avoid a pothole you know is there for a couple of weeks, it is frustrating to have to deal with that.” said Councillor O’Donoghue.
“But our hands are tied, we can’t control the weather and the way the weather has broken up some of our roads, so we have to just unfortunately have a little bit of patience and hopefully our roads will be well maintained now as soon as there’s a couple of dry days.” he added.
