A new report into the development of Irish sheep-wool products suggests that LEADER development companies can play a key role in strengthening the value chain — from producers right through to processors.
The findings indicate that support could include establishing a small-scale wool scouring plant, which would act as a demonstrator hub for high-end Irish wool products.
The report was launched at ATU Mount Bellew Agricultural College.
The report has also advised Kilkenny Leader Partnership to develop a broad base of skills across the value chain, ensuring that it can reach shearers, community groups, craftspeople and emerging processors along with farmers, and this is something which Kilkenny Leader CEO Declan Rice believes it can do.
Beyond training, the leader programme has a unique toolbox of support measures it can offer to eligible project promoters, including analysis and development, marketing, capital
towards equipment and buildings along with the training measure.
