Carlow Little Theatre Society hopes to return to the Town Hall.
The drama group, founded there in 1944, wants to use the venue again for rehearsals and shows.
Plans have been delayed by insurance and safety issues, but progress is being made.
It is hoped the move will boost local arts and culture.
Cllr Adrienne Wallace says it’s vital to have places for our artists.
“I think it’s so important that we have public spaces that are free and accessible to use for a whole host of reasons.” said Councillor Wallace.
“I suppose we’re seeing it already that there’s almost a privatisation of these spaces, You know, a lot of the cultural quarters in Dublin are starting to close down and, you know, be commercialised into hotels or whatever the form may be, so I think it’s actually very important that while we’re here in Carlow, we’re actually pushing to reopen these spaces so that they are free to use, and particularly when it’s a theatre society” she added.
