The discarding of wreaths and other refuse has become a problem at Callan’s principal graveyard in recent years.
Kilbride Cemetery, situated just outside the town, is the only graveyard in the Callan-Thomastown Municipal District where such dumping has become a recurring issue.
Fine Gael Councillor Joe Lyons, who is also a member of the cemetery committee, told KCLR News about the different types of refuse being dumped at Kilbride.
“There’s been reports of people bringing their grass cuttings into the graveyard and they expect the council to take that away and I know a couple of years ago there was a skip put in by the council before the annual cemetery mass and they discovered that there was actually household rubbish brought into the skip.”
“Kilbride Cemetery is approximately half a mile outside the town and it’s an ideal spot for people just to go in and dump their rubbish in.”
