Kilkenny’s Mayor says a Changing Places toilet facility is urgently required in the City centre.
Such an offering includes a toilet, hoist, washbasin and an adult-sized changing bench for people with disabilities who may require assistance.
Mayor John Coonan told KCLR News; “Alas, because of the historic city that we have and the difficulty that you have, to go through the ringer for planning permission I’ve been advised that the putting in place of a permanent such facility would take three to five years, people that have the mobility challenges and with disability are entitled to equal access like the rest of us who are mobile, but considering the fact that our planning takes so long in Kilkenny I proposed that three to five years is far too long to wait”.
He adds; “So my proposal is that an interim measure would be put in place so that you could have a modular system or a mobile system sourced and put in place to see to it that the provision of such a changing place facility would be put in place sooner rather than later and that when the planning permission does come through at the Market Yard, at Kilkenny Castle, at the Water Hub we can fully say then that we are truly universal and we provide the facilities for everybody”.
