A local Fianna Fáil TD says he still has confidence in his party leader despite candidates losing out in the two weekend by-elections.
Senator and former Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne secured President Catherine Connolly’s old seat in Galway West, while former footballer Daniel Ennis topped the poll in Dublin Central for the Social Democrats.
It’s been hailed a bad few days for Fianna Fáil whose hopefuls finished fifth and second last respectively.
Carlow Kilkenny’s Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere says; “Micheál is the leader of the party, he deserves huge credit for bringing Fianna Fáil back from the brink in 2011, he has the full support of the Cabinet, he has the full support of the party and we have our Parliamentary Party meeting tomorrow evening and I think it’s really important that all the discussions are done internally, it’s like when you lose a big match, I’m from Kilkenny and we’re out of the Leinster Championship yesterday, sometimes you need to take a step back and reflect on what you can all do differently, individually and collectively”.
