The opening game of the 2026 JJ Kavanagh Carlow Senior Hurling Championship has been postponed following a bereavement within the Ballinkillen club.
Ballinkillen’s meeting with St Mullins had been scheduled to take place tomorrow evening in McGrath Park, Bagenalstown, but the fixture has now been moved to Sunday at 2.30pm at the same venue.
The decision was taken following the passing of Colm English, father of Ballinkillen player Eric English.
Carlow GAA and the participating clubs have moved quickly to accommodate the change, allowing players, club members and the wider community time to pay their respects.
Despite the postponement, the remainder of this weekend’s championship schedule remains unchanged.
Saturday’s double-header at Netwatch Cullen Park will go ahead as planned, with Bagenalstown Gaels taking on Naomh Eoin before Naomh Bríd face Mount Leinster Rangers.
The revised fixture means the eagerly anticipated clash between last year’s runners-up St Mullins and a Ballinkillen side hoping to challenge the county’s leading teams will now throw in at 2.30pm on Sunday in McGrath Park.
Everyone at KCLR extends their sympathies to Eric English, the English family, and all at Ballinkillen Hurling Club following their loss.
