A Kilkenny Councillor is calling for grit or salt to be made more available for use on rural roads.
Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh raised the issue at a recent Castlecomer Municipal District meeting.
She says there had been a previous agreement with the IFA to leave salt at a designated point, allowing farmers to use it on roads that aren’t covered by the council’s winter maintenance routes.
Cllr Cavanagh is asking for a similar agreement to be considered and told KCLR News’ Owain Comerford that rural roads can become extremely hazardous, leaving people isolated in their homes; “People have to deliver oil, they have to collect milk or whatever so I think it creates a huge problem if the programme doesn’t extend to covering those rural roads grit should be provided and I asked year in year out that salt or grit be left at crossroads for people to spread it and they would be prepared to spread it”.
