The group is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. To mark the milestone, they are putting together a time capsule that will be displayed in Carlow County Museum.
There is still time for those who want to take part in the project to join the society, before the deadline this Saturday the 10th of October.
The organisation is run by volunteers, who host a number of activities including free lectures and walking tours throughout the year.
Membership to Carlow’s Historical and Archaeological Society costs just €20 for the year and you can find the application here.
The time capsule will include handwritten letters from members of the society, reflecting on their memories of the town and county.
Those taking part in putting the capsule together will be invited to write a letter, sharing their recollection of a person, a place or of an occasion in Carlow in their own living memory.
Committee member Lynn Whelan says these handwritten letters will add a personal touch to the time capsule.
“There’s something about seeing a person’s writing in years to come… to see their parents, their grandparents, or even someone they knew from town”
“It just adds a very personal connection to it, rather than just printed text”.
