Ahead of another busy County Final weekend, a Carlow County Councillor is calling for greater road safety measures to be implemented at Dr Cullen Park on matchdays.
Fianna Fail’s John Pender says hundreds of supporters regularly cross the road from St Mary’s Cemetery to the venue to attend games.
He recently saw an elderly man narrowly avoiding being struck by a speeding car when trying to cross the road to enter the ground.
Cllr Pender said the Council will consult with the relevant authorities to make matchdays safer for attendees, “the chief executive said he was going to speak to the GAA authorities and the Garda about the situation there. I’d be hoping that heads could be knocked together and see could something be done there because it’s very, very dangerous.”
“I was up there last weekend. I saw an elderly man trying to get across the road. He was very lucky that he wasn’t seriously injured with a car that came beating down.”
