Local TD Ann Phelan was the Deputy to propose Joan Burton for leadership of the Labour party yesterday.
The Minister announced yesterday afternoon that she would go for the job and Deputy Phelan was alongside her on the plinth at Leinster house as she made her statement.
It emerged later that Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin does not intend to put his name forward against her.
Ann Phelan told KCLR news on Monday immediately after Eamon Gilmore announced his resignation that she would be backing Minister Burton for the role.
