Workers in SuperValu on Kennedy Avenue in Carlow have been dealt a massive blow this evening as it’s been announced that the store WILL now close.
The store had originally been set to close its doors to customers in Carlow Shopping Centre from today (Friday 22 January) but legal proceedings taken by the shopping centre’s landlord meant that closure was postponed.
The case was taken against owners Musgraves on the grounds that they would be in breach of their original anchor tenancy lease should they leave. The original lease terms were set in 1993.
SuperValu Statement
A statement from SuperValu in full reads
SuperValu on Kennedy Avenue in Carlow is due to close on Friday 5th February 2016.
The landlord of the Carlow Shopping Centre had initiated legal proceedings in relation to the closure which SuperValu has successfully defended.
It is important to note that SuperValu’s other store in Carlow, Arthurs SuperValu in Sandhill Shopping Centre, is independently owned and is unaffected by any of these developments.
Job Losses
However, after a hearing today, a statement issued by Musgraves says they have successfully defended those proceedings and the store will now close in two weeks from today, Friday 5 February.
52 jobs there will now be lost.
