Children in Carlow and Kilkenny risk missing out on school over lack of places in autism units

Local children with autism could be forced to miss a year of education because of the lack of spaces in schools with dedicated autism units.

So says local Deputy Kathleen Funchion who has raised the matter in the Dáil again in recent days.

Education Minister Richard Bruton promised a number of weeks ago that a review of the number of places available in Kilkenny and Carlow would be carried out by the National Council for Special Education.

Deputy Funchion says she knows a number of families who are in a desperate situation because they can’t get their children into primary school this September.

And she says there are now waiting lists to get into these schools.
