The Labour Party’s named its Ireland South candidate for the European elections.
Limerick native Niamh Hourigan was selected at a convention in Cork yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.
She’s a sister of Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan and daughter of former Mayor of Limerick, Michael Hourigan.
A sociologist and mother of two, Niamh aims to bring three priorities to Europe; to fight for a Just Transition to a greener economy, Introducing a European Plan for Affordable Housing, and Protecting Irish Neutrality.
And she’s delighted with her selection noting “very honoured and delighted, you know the European Elections are really important, it’s very important that the people of Ireland South have a strong voice in Europe, at the moment Ireland has no voice in the Socialists and Democrats which are the second largest group in the European Parliament and the Irish Labour Party is the only Irish political party which is part of the Socialists and Democrats so effectively by not having a Labour MEP at the moment we have no voice in the second largest grouping in the European Parliament and really my aim in the next couple of months is to campaign as hard as possible to fix that”.
