A local Councillor has called for a camera to be installed in one North Kilkenny area to combat illegal dumping.
Mary Hilda Cavanagh raised the issue at this month’s meeting of Castlecomer Municipal District, where she outlined concerns from residents.
The area in question is behind numbers 9, 10, 11 and 12 Assumption Place in Urlingford, where illegal dumping has ramped up in recent times.
Speaking to KCLR News, Councillor Cavanagh says something must be done to address the issue, noting; “People have been dumping there, when some people see rubbish thrown well then they add to it unfortunately, it may be done by anybody, there’s no way of knowing who’s doing it but at this stage the county council need to clean it up and hopefully put in a camera but the people who live there tell me that if it’s cleaned up they will keep a steady eye on it after that and watch for cars going in because it’s not somebody carrying a bag of rubbish it’s people obviously that are going in there at night but as I said the people could be coming from anywhere like they do when they’re dumping out at our area”.
She adds that the installation of a camera is key, saying “”It would be a complete deterrent because nobody wants to get caught on camera and there is a serious fine for anybody who is caught, it’s a preventative measure really and cameras have worked very well at recycling centres where they’ve been installed so I have great hopes if the county council clean it up and install a camera that it will solve the problem completely”.
