Almost 73,000 students are receiving their Junior Cert results today, many of them in Carlow and Kilkenny.
However, the percentage of students scoring the highest possible marks has fallen in most subjects.
The Irish Times reports an average of 4% of students earned the top grade of ‘distinction’ across 25 papers however it seems the percentage of students scoring the highest possible marks has fallen in most subjects.
Castlecomer Community School has told KCLR News that there was great excitement there earlier as results were picked up.
“The combination of CBA’s and written exams greatly suit the learning style of a wide variety of students” said principal Pat Murphy who also welcomed the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement as being “an important innovation in terms of recognising the full spectrum of students learning”
“Overall”, he went on “we have seen a significant improvement in our results since covid. There was a considerable increase in the number of Higher Merits and Distinctions this year and a number of students who did exceptionally well. While the Junior Certificate is more of a stepping stone than an end in itself it is very important stepping stone.”
And he adds; “A big congratulations to all our students and staff alike on their achievements today”.
Abbey Community College in Ferrybank too has hailed its students for outstanding results.
Principal there Michelle Jefford notes; “We are extremely proud of all our students, and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate every single one of them on this special day.
“Today marks a significant educational milestone for our students, their families, and the primary schools they attended, all of whom have provided unwavering support during their time at Abbey Community College and have played essential roles in our thriving school community.
“We would like to thank all the staff of Abbey Community College, teaching and non-teaching for their dedication and support to the Junior Cycle class of 2024.
“There is always an elite group of students who excel academically beyond the national averages. This year, we have noted a significant rise in the percentage of our students achieving distinctions, the highest accolade attainable at the Junior Cycle.
“The examination results received today will be combined with outcomes of Classroom Based Assessments, short courses and other areas of learning to create the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) award for each student.
“Reflecting on these Junior Cycle examination results, we take great pride in our school community, which consistently demonstrates academic excellence with enthusiasm and commitment as we strive Together Towards Excellence.”
