A planned €20 million rejuvenation of Carlow town centre should include café-style spaces, pedestrianised streets, and vibrant public areas, according to a recent survey.
The “Your Carlow” survey, which collected over 3,000 responses in October, revealed that 98% of participants believe changes are needed to improve the town. The survey forms part of Project Carlow 2040, a strategic plan for the town’s future.
Top priorities for respondents include outdoor café spaces, pedestrian-friendly streets, areas for socializing, sustainable planting, and quality street lighting. Many also expressed a desire for more greenery, better paving, and safe seating areas.
A significant 76% of participants felt Carlow Town Centre is not an attractive destination, citing physical deterioration and infrastructural issues. While the town has over 3,690 parking spaces, 65% of respondents favored prioritizing pedestrian spaces over car parking for the town’s revitalization.
Additionally, 75% supported extending the one-way system on Tullow Street and Potato Market to create more space for pedestrians. Most participants (94%) emphasized the importance of creating public spaces that cater to all users, including older people, young people, and those with disabilities.
