Carlow is set to install its very first public drinking water fountain, providing residents and visitors with a safe, free, and eco-friendly option to refill their reusable water bottles in the town centre.

The new fountain will be located in the coach park, a central area in Carlow, making it easily accessible to both locals and tourists alike.

Carlow Town Mayor, Cllr Fintan Phelan, has been a long-time advocate for the installation of a public drinking water fountain, campaigning for the initiative since 2019. Speaking to KCLR News, he expressed his satisfaction at the project’s progress and highlighted its importance in promoting sustainability.

“This new tap will not only provide a convenient place for people to refill their water bottles, but it will also play a crucial role in reducing the reliance on single-use plastic water bottles, which are harmful to our environment,” said Mayor Phelan.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Carlow County Council to promote sustainability and reduce plastic waste in the town. The fountain is expected to encourage more people to bring and use reusable water bottles, helping to cut down on plastic waste in the local community.
