Secondary school girls in County Carlow are feeling intimidated on their cycles to and from school, which has left some feeling unsafe and discouraged about cycling in the future.
These were some of the experiences that Transition Year students at Presentation College in Askea recently shared with John McDarby, Carlow County Council’s Road Safety Promotion Officer.
John McDarby told KCLR News that he was surprised by the extent of the hostility the girls have experienced while cycling.
“I’m kind of a generation ahead of them and I kind of probably don’t experience kind of intimidation that they would feel.” said John.
“A few people would be shouting verbal abuse at me up to now anyway, but it would be very sad if that would put especially young girls off the great pleasure that is cycling on the roads of Ireland, so I want to make sure they can get out there and find it as enjoyable as to all the rest of us do.” he added.
