Carlow County Council has launched a new sustainability pilot designed to eliminate single-use plastics at family events.
The local authority has rolled out reusable “Party Packs” across the county, providing everything needed to host eco-friendly celebrations without the usual mountain of bin waste.
What is in the kit?
Each party kit caters for up to 30 people and features a full box of party essentials:
- Durable plates and bowls
- Reusable cups and cutlery
- Table jugs
- Colourful bunting made from upcycled textiles by the Community Reuse Network Ireland (CRNI)
Where to find them
The scheme operates on a simple borrow, wash, and return model. Ten community hubs across Carlow are acting as official lending points for the six-month pilot, making the packs highly accessible for local residents.
Interested families can contact these participating locations to reserve a kit for birthdays, sports days, or school events:
- Carlow County Library
- Delta Centre
- Hacketstown Tidy Towns
- Develop Tullow Association
- St. Catherine’s Community Services Centre
- Tullow Road Residents Association
- Absolute Beginners Creche
- County Carlow Environmental Network (CEN)
- Bagenalstown Improvement Group
- The Cairdeas Centre
The initiative was developed by Environmental Awareness Officers across the Southern Waste Region and is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Waste Prevention Programme.
Council officials are hoping the scheme not only saves families money but encourages a more circular, climate-friendly lifestyle in the community.
