Óglaigh na hÉireann has confirmed the death in service of one of its Sergeants.
Robert “Bobby” Rooney enlisted in the Defence Forces in 2007 and served for 19 years.
Most of his career at home was in the organisation’s Training Centre, serving in the Air Defence Regiment, the Military College, 1 Mechanised Infantry Company and the Training Installation Staff Coolmoney (TISC), in the Glen of Imaal. While overseas, Sgt Rooney deployed to both UNIFIL, in Southern Lebanon and with EUFOR, in Chad.
Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy said his tragic death will be felt by the entire Defence Forces Family.
