There’s confusion among student unions after yesterday’s announcement by the The Higher Education Minister which appears to rule out plans to permanently reduce college fees.
Government had previously promised to make cuts to such costs each year and did so by €500 in 2025, but yesterday James Lawless rowed back on further drops that saying the proposal could be abandoned to help cover the cost of overspending at the Department of Education.
SETU Carlow Student Union Vice President Avii Olasogba told KCLR News; “I think the Government should honour the promise to reduce the fees, I think the €1,000 a couple of years ago was perfect, I thought we were heading in that direction and I think we’ve done a full 360 and we’re going backwards now after being promised reduced fees”.
