Fianna Fáil Councillor Andrew McGuinness has been elected Mayor of Kilkenny City’s Municipal District for the fourth time.
He was proposed by Councillor Joe Malone and seconded by Councillor David Fitzgerald.
Outgoing Mayor John Coonan of Fine Gael was elected Deputy Mayor.
Speaking after the vote, Mayor McGuinness said he is particularly looking forward to one specific opening during his term in office.
“It’ll be a huge event, the reopening of City Hall. And why it’s particularly, I suppose, special for me is, you know, being mayor this year. The last time there was a major reopening and refurbishment of City hall was in 1985, after the fire. And my grandfather, Mick McGuinness, was the mayor at the time that we opened City hall back then. So to be able to do it 40 years later have the same honour as my granddad did is great.” said Councillor McGuinness.
