Three motorists locally among those caught speeding during bank holiday road safety campaign

Gardaí are continuing their Bank Holiday roads policing operation for a fifth day today.

One driver was detected speeding every two minutes over the past four days. Among the highest speeds recorded was 179 kilometres per hour on the M9 at Paulstown. That motorist is due before the District Court on a dangerous driving summons.

Other detections included 142 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone on the N24 at Piltown, and 98 in a 60 zone on the N77 at Dunmore in County Kilkenny.

So far, 121 drivers have been arrested for drink or drug driving, while 310 people were caught using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Two people died on Irish roads yesterday, bringing this year’s road death toll to 110, including six locally.
