Thousands of people are struggling to get a GP according to new HSE figures.

Data released to Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane, shows 5,775 people couldn’t secure one.

It appears the number of GPs in the country doesn’t match the growing needs of the population, with the number of new GP’s increasing by less than 200 between 2020 and 2025, compared with a population growth of over 480,000.

The HSE data also reveals the amount of GPs who took on private contracts was double the amount who took on public contracts between 2020 and 2025.

Sinn Fein says the numbers represent a ‘crisis point’ in GP access.

Of the 86 GPs in Carlow and Kilkenny, 79 provide care under the General Medical Services Scheme.
