Forty per cent of those on Carlow County Council’s housing list are seeking one-bed properties, prompting the local authority to engage with developers about including more appropriately scaled units in future projects.
With a strong pipeline of housing developments not yet at planning stage in Carlow, Councillor John Cassin is encouraged by the local authority’s commitment to make greater provision for such a significant fraction of its current housing list.
Councillor Cassin said the Council is making welcome moves to address such a significant backlog.
“The last person that was allocated a one-bed house had been on the list since 2012, which is a long time to be waiting for to be allocated a house, and actually, when you look at statistics, you know, it’s 40%, which is, you know, almost half of the people who are on the list waiting for a one-bed.”
“I suppose in a lot of cases, single people are often overlooked for allocations of houses, and I suppose this is, just really focusing the council’s mind set on to, to make sure that we have one-bed houses coming along for people who are in that category.”
