A number of people have died following a serious collision on the M9 this morning.
A car travelling southbound on the northbound lane between Junction 3 and Junction 4 was involved in a head-on collision with a second car at around 3am.
Gardaí say there have been several fatalities.
The female driver and front-seat passenger of the second car, both aged in their 30s, have been taken from the scene to Tallaght University Hospital, where both remain in critical condition.
A female rear-seat passenger, aged in her 20s, was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital in a serious condition.
A third passenger, a child, has been taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin and is also in a serious condition.
The M9 remains closed in both directions between Junction 3 (Athy) and Junction 4 (Castledermot), with local diversions in place.
A Garda Forensic Collision investigation will take place.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
They are especially appealing to road users who were travelling on the M9, either northbound or southbound, between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. this morning and who may have dashcam footage of the incident or the surrounding area, to make it available to investigating officers.
