Post mortem examinations are to be carried out today on the bodies of five teenagers who were killed in yesterday’s head-on collision on the M9 in County Kildare.
It’s understood they were aged between 14 and 16 years old.
Three women (two in their thirties and one in her twenties) and a young boy were also seriously injured in the crash.
It prompted Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly to condemn ‘reckless’ incidents where cars are being driven in the wrong direction for social media ‘likes’.
He says deliberately driving against motorway traffic for social media attention is reckless and can have devastating consequences – and such incidents put Gardaí in an extremely challenging position.
The incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman, and the Commissioner says Gardaí are cooperating fully with its investigation.
