Works on the Ferrymountgarret Bridge in south Kilkenny have been ongoing late into the evenings to ensure it reopens as planned in a week’s time.
The historic structure spanning the River Barrow and a key link to neighbouring county Wexford has been closed to traffic since the 24th of June.
Many people in and travelling through the area have seen travel plans disrupted by the closure but the local authority says there were no other options while upgrade and safety issues were being addressed.
A spokesperson pledged to issue an update for KCLR News’ main morning bulletin each Friday and in today’s they say the project’s “continuing with the removal of the scaffolding structure above the bridge, the installation of waterproofing and the laying of concrete ongoing over the last week”.
Resurfacing works will begin over the weekend and the council, whose crews are working closely with contractors Glas Ltd, is confident that the road will reopen as planned next Friday (28th August).
They also “Acknowledge the patience and cooperation of local residents, businesses and road users throughout the duration of the works and appreciates the efforts made to accommodate the temporary traffic arrangements”.
