Rathvilly have made their intentions clear in the Michael Lyng Motors Carlow Senior Football Championship after a convincing victory over defending champions Old Leighlin.
Rathvilly ran out 22 points to 5 winners, holding Old Leighlin to just a single score in the second half.
Speaking to KCLR after the game, Rathvilly manager Kevin Byrne was delighted with the response from his side.
“Yeah, we’re happy with that, a lot happier this week than we have been in fairness in the last three games.
“We knew we’d create chances, we put them away. We kicked a lot away the last day. Now, you can’t be on fire the whole time, but we wanted to prove a point, we wanted to set out our stall and to make sure we finished in the top two.
“To give the month off, to get lads that are carrying knocks a break. Tonight clicked, it was one of those nights. We could have had a couple of goal chances, but overall, couldn’t ask for more.”
The result moves Rathvilly to the top of the group, at least for now.
Éire Óg can move back to the summit when they face Fenagh this evening. They have won all three of their games so far, while Rathvilly previously drew with Palatine.
Old Leighlin, meanwhile, have now won just once in four games and will face Bagenalstown Gaels in their next fixture.
There are three more games to come across the weekend, all at Netwatch Cullen Park:
Friday: Éire Óg v Fenagh
Friday: Bagenalstown Gaels v Mount Leinster Rangers
Sunday: Grange v Palatine
