A Carlow Kilkenny TD is calling for urgent government action to strictly regulate and enforce e-scooter safety.
Fianna Fáil TD Peter “Chap” Cleere described the vehicles as a community “scourge” following the tragic death of a young boy on an e-scooter in Carlow this week.
He highlighted reports that six children have been placed on life support due to e-scooter injuries, warning that current misuse on local roads is highly dangerous.
Deputy Cleere is demanding increased Garda powers, mandatory safety gear, and the same legislative urgency previously used to tackle illegal scrambler bikes, “E-scooters can be a legitimate form of transport when they’re used responsibly, but we’re seeing far too much dangerous use on our roads and in our communities, particularly by young people.”
“The government now needs to act by strengthening enforcement, improving safety standards and increasing public awareness,” he added.
