The handover of the brewery site from Diageo to Kilkenny County Council has been set back for another few months.
The delays comes as contractors continue to remove asbestos from the site.
Kilkenny County Council has confirmed that it will not take charge of the 16-acre Smithwick’s brewery site from Diageo until the autumn.
Concerns had been raised over the use of the city centre site at a public meeting earlier this year.
At that meeting, residents questioned whether part of the site that had been previously been affected by a spill of oil containing PCBs in 1980, was suitable for development.
However, in a response to KCLR, the local authority stated that the area affected will be developed with new buildings and there are no plans for a children’s play area there.
The proposed skate park is located a “significant distance” away from the area of concern, according to the council.
They say the design of the skate park will include a concrete base slab so there will be no direct exposure to the soil.
