Calls again for an independent banking inquiry

There is further pressure on the government to launch an independent Oireachtas banking inquiry.

It comes as Independent TD Stephen Donnelly announced over the weekend that he’s to resign from the committee after the coalition added two senators to the inquiry- ensuring it had a government majority.

The Taoiseach and the Tánaiste discussed the Oireachtas banking inquiry yesterday – following the resignation of Deputy Donnelly and a government spokesperson confirmed that no whips will be imposed on party members serving on the inquiry.

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has contacted Senator Susan O’Keeffe and Senator Michael D’Arcy calling on them to resign from the banking committee.

Fine Gael TD John Paul Phelan is the only local representative on the inquiry team.
